With so much pressure surrounding an unexpected pregnancy, the idea of having to sort through all the information can be even more emotionally draining. But understanding the process can help you feel more in control of your decisions.
At Black Hills Pregnancy Center, we’re here to walk you through the different types of abortion, so you can understand your options and make an informed decision. You can visit us for a no-cost appointment to information in person.
Let’s take a closer look at the two types of abortion procedures and what you need to know about each.
What Are the Different Types?
There are two types of abortion: medical and surgical. The type available to you largely depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy and other factors. Here’s an overview of both medical and surgical options.
Medical Abortion
A medical abortion, more commonly referred to as the abortion pill, is the process of taking two different drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, typically, unassisted in your own home. This method is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks gestation. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, while misoprostol causes uterine contractions that lead to cramping and bleeding to expel the pregnancy.
The most common side effects include vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping. Other side effects may include nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, and diarrhea. Because you won’t be under the oversight of medical professionals, you will have to monitor yourself for the risks, such as hemorrhaging and infection.
More importantly, you should consider that many women report that the pain of this procedure is severe. It’s something to take into account before you proceed.
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion happens in a clinic or hospital setting later in pregnancy. This procedure involves dilating the cervix to access the uterus, followed by the use of suction or surgical instruments to remove the pregnancy.
After the procedure, you will likely wait in a room for a few hours to be monitored for excessive bleeding or complications. The risks of a surgical abortion can be more severe, with the potential to cause painful, absent periods, or even future miscarriages and infertility.
