This is a common question, especially if you’re unsure about symptoms or recent exposure. If you’ve been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or think you might have one, understanding how these infections behave is an important first step.
Your health is worth taking seriously. Black Hills Pregnancy Center offers confidential pregnancy counseling and support in a welcoming environment. Schedule your free appointment to learn more about your options and next steps.
What Are STIs?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites passed through sexual contact. One of the trickier aspects is that many STIs produce no noticeable symptoms, which means someone can carry and spread an infection without knowing it.
Because of this, testing is the only reliable way to find out.
No Symptoms Doesn’t Mean No Infection
One of the most common misconceptions about STIs is that you’d know if you had one. You can be infected and feel completely fine, which is exactly what makes them easy to spread without realizing it.
When symptoms do show up, they vary widely but can include fever, swollen lymph nodes, burning or painful urination, pain during sex, unusual bleeding, abnormal discharge, or lower abdominal pain.
However, even when symptoms are mild or seem to resolve on their own, the infection can still be active in your body. Feeling better is not the same as being clear.
Can STIs Clear Up Without Treatment?
It depends on the type. However, waiting to find out is not a safe approach.
Bacterial STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis can be cured with antibiotics when caught early. Left untreated, they can lead to more serious problems, including fertility issues, organ damage, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and complications during pregnancy.
Viral STIs, including herpes and HIV, don’t have cures, but they can be managed. Antiviral drugs can reduce symptoms and significantly lower the risk of passing the infection to someone else. Living with a viral STI is manageable with the right care; going without treatment is where the real risk lies.
How Can You Help Prevent STIs?
Testing is only part of the picture. Reducing your risk also comes down to the choices you make, including abstinence, being faithful to one uninfected partner, avoiding drug and alcohol use, and having honest conversations with a partner about sexual history and health.
